Dear Members,
What a wonderful Spring Exhibit at the Art League! There just wasn't
enough prizes to give out because everyone's art pieces were EXCELLENT!! The ART, FOOD, AND FUN at the gallery was SUPER!!
Even our guest, Malaysian artist Chew Fang Chin seemed to enjoy himself. He graciously gave us a demonstration while
he was at the gallery then Beverly Jean Johnston escorted him to the other locations on the Art Walk. The weather was
glorious that night and I saw so many new faces, even my card club friend's daughter, a fellow artist from Scranton and her
friend stopped by to see the exhibit and were very impressed. If you haven't seen it please stop by. Tom Greco
is planning to have the next 1st Friday in May at our gallery while our exhibit is up. I hope you can attend that evening
and show your support for the WVA. It will be nice if the artists can be there to answer any questions or comments the viewers
might have. Also we will still have the exhibit up for our 3rd Friday in May during the Fiesta so tell all your friends
to stop by during the Fine Arts Fiesta. The May 3rd Friday will also be open to artist vendors in and outside our
gallery. We have limited space available since our show will be on the walls, but space is available outside with your
own tent for each day. Please call for information at (570)417-4090.
You might be aware
that I am teaching a mural class at LCCC and know that my classes design was accepted to be the Wilkes-Barre Leaderships Mural
Project. The mural theme is "The Wyoming Valley- Past, Present, and Future". This is to be placed on the Times-Leader
building, on the side of the building that you see coming down Coal Street. The mural is 30 feet by 95 feet and will
be sectioned on 5 feet by 15 feet panels and attached to the building. The Wilkes-Barre Leadership has set up a
space on Washington Street in a store front and will be asking the community and artists to participate in painting the sections
of the mural. Mary Lee Klemish, artist and WB Leadership member is overseeing the work. If anyone is willing to
volunteer please let me know. (570)417-4090. Mary Lee is looking for scout groups, church groups, schools, art
groups, or anyone community minded to paint. The Wilkes-Barre Leadership members are hoping to install the mural so
it will be up for the Fine Arts Fiesta. This is an optimistic goal. If you can, PLEASE VOLUNTEER. Don't
forget to come to our May 9th monthly meeting, Friday at 7:30 when we will be VOTING on the new officers for next year.
Our guest artist will be Bill Teitsworth with water media. Also remember to sign up for the workshop on
Saturday. The workshops are beneficial to growing as artists. I can see the growth in many of our members that
take classes each month. Even if the medium is unfamiliar to you, tricks of the trade are given such as on composition,
value, or style. We can all use a fresh look at our art once in a while. See you there. Catherine
Laskaris, President
OUR MAY MEETING:
May's Guest Artist,

239 Schyuler Ave, Kingston, location. Please contact Linda Keck at 331-2390 or lskeck@comcast.net to pre-register.

Acrylic Supply List: Bill uses heavy-body acrylics from Liquitex, Brera
(Maimeri), and Winsor and Newton. He find them to be more or less interchangeable, with minor differences. His palette most
days has these paints on it:
Cadmium yellow lemon
Cadmium yellow medium
Cadmium red light
Napthol crimson
Permanent rose (Winsor and Newton)
Ultramarine blue
Pthalocyanine blue
Titanium white
In the past he has often used more colors than this, including earth colors and
black, but at the moment these seven or eight colors are all you will need.
He lays out my colors on a paper palette in the Masterson Palette-seal box.
This is a terrific palette, and keeps acrylics fresh for days or even weeks. It would probably work just as well for oil paints.
You can buy this at AC Moore, or from one of the catalog houses.
We would like to welcome the following new members of the Wyoming Valley Art League: Please
welcome Zachary Wood, and Dr. John & Mrs. Mary Theroux and their children John, Laura,

The 6th Annual Festival of the Arts in Beech Mountain Lakes is fast approaching! Friday, June 20 and Saturday, June 21 will find the community’s Clubhouse converted into a center for Fine Arts in southern Luzerne
County. Forty artists and fine craftspeople will be on hand to display and sell a wide variety of art – from wire sculptures
to watercolors, from pastels to photographs, from glassworks to glass-and-gold jewelry! Ten (10) WVAL members will be participating
in the event: President Cathy Laskaris, John Clark, Lorraine Elias, Bob
Heim, Ed Jameson, Barbara King, Jane Kishbaugh, Maria Livrone, Jim McGuire,
and Tim Weaver. The Fest
is one of Beech Mountain Lakes’ main fundraisers each year. In addition, this year’s show will benefit the Wyoming
Valley S.P.C.A.
While browsing and buying on Friday evening (from 7 to 9 PM), you’ll be treated to delights for
the ears – the piano of Steve Boesch, the guitar of Brian Valentine, the best of Blues by Teddy Young and Froggy, and
a string quartet from the Hazleton Symphony – and for the palate, hot and cold hors d’ouerves will be accompanied
by fruit and champagne punches. (A small entrance fee -- $10 for one, $15 for two -- will be charged.) There is no charge
for Saturday’s show.
